Processes of Change: Old Selves and New Ones

A Book Review

One of the most useful books I have read recently that deals with life changes, especially for people in mid-life or beyond is "Working Identity: Unconventional Strategies for Reinventing Your Career" by Herminia Ibarra.

In my view Ibarra’s book is much more than a book about careers. It describes accurately the dilemmas and obstacles that face us when we seek change, yet fear it. The author pictures successful and realistic approaches to change in ways that will be appealing and recognisable to existentially-inclined readers. The book’s principles and strategies offer valuable insights into navigating significant shifts in personal identity, relationships and life purpose.

Ibarra's central argument is that meaningful change is an active, exploratory process rather than a solely introspective journey. The book highlights three main avenues for change: experimenting with new activities, engaging with new networks, and reinterpreting personal experiences in light of new possibilities.

The nine strategies Ibarra outlines are universally applicable:

1. Act and then reflect: Take proactive steps in new directions and use these experiences to gain clarity about your desires and identity.

2. Flirt with your possible selves: Experiment with different roles and lifestyles to explore various facets of your identity.

3. Live the contradictions: Accept and navigate the inherent ambiguities and conflicts during periods of transition.

4. Make big changes in small steps: Implement incremental changes that cumulatively lead to significant transformation.

5. Experiment with new roles: Try new activities or responsibilities on a trial basis to gauge their fit with your evolving identity.

6. Find people who are what you want to be: Connect with individuals who embody the traits or lifestyles you aspire to.

7. Don't wait for a catalyst: Utilise everyday moments as opportunities for change rather than waiting for a dramatic event.

8. Step back periodically: Take breaks to reflect on your progress and direction, but avoid prolonged disengagement.

9. Seize windows of opportunity: Be alert and ready to take advantage of opportunities that align with your new direction.

The book's case studies provide a rich tapestry of experiences, all illustrating that change is often non-linear and messy. This realistic portrayal helps us understand that struggles and setbacks are part of the process of change, fostering resilience and patience.

Ibarra’s emphasis on taking small steps and achieving incremental wins is particularly valuable for those feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of major changes. This approach encourages continuous progress and adjustment, leading to deeper and more sustainable transformations.

In numerous YouTube interviews, Ibarra elaborates on how her strategies can be applied beyond career transitions. She emphasises the importance of flexibility and the willingness to experiment with different aspects of life, whether it involves personal relationships, lifestyle changes, or exploring new hobbies and interests. Ibarra stresses that these changes often require a shift in personal identity, which can be both challenging and rewarding.

For instance, she discusses the role of storytelling in making sense of our experiences and shaping our future directions. By continually refining and retelling our personal narratives, we can better understand our evolving identities and make more informed decisions about our lives.

"Working Identity" is a comforting and resonant book. Although useful for people at any stage of life, I believe it will be especially helpful for those in the second half of their careers. (As one who deprecates socially-imposed ‘life scripts’ I refuse to put a number on it!) The author helps us understand how change in some fields and at some stages are under-institutionalised. Its blend of empirical research, practical strategies, and engaging storytelling makes it a valuable resource for navigating the complexities of personal transformation in a dynamic world. Those undertaking therapy - or otherwise consciously navigating change - will appreciate Ibarra's discusion of how we can deal with, and even enjoy, the times of playful liminality.

Whether you are considering a career shift, rethinking your personal relationships, or seeking a more fulfilling lifestyle, Ibarra’s insights provide a robust framework for thinking about your goals.
